Built in 1900, 734 Spain Street is a traditional Creole cottage tucked into the historic Faubourg Marigny, one of New Orleans’ oldest and most colorful neighborhoods. Long before the house was here, the land belonged to Bernard de Marigny’s sprawling family plantation. In 1805, Marigny began dividing the property into smaller lots, creating what would become one of the city’s earliest neighborhoods outside the French Quarter. More than 220 years later, much of that original street pattern remains. Following the gentle bend of the Mississippi River, Spain Street is part of the wonderfully irregular layout that gives the Marigny so much of its character. Like many of the modest cottages along this block, 734 Spain wasn’t built to be grand or imposing. It was the kind of simple, practical home made for everyday New Orleans life. More than a century later, it remains a small but important piece of the Marigny, a neighborhood that has changed plenty over the years while somehow holding onto the character that makes it unmistakably New Orleans.
