Built around 1830, 833 Burgundy Street comes from a time when the look of New Orleans was beginning to change. Unlike the older Creole cottages and townhouses found throughout the French Quarter, this three-story brick home reflects the growing American influence on the city’s architecture during the early 19th century. It is part of a remarkable row of historic buildings stretching from 827 to 841 Burgundy Street, whose elevations were drawn in 1838 by James Gallier Sr., the celebrated architect behind Gallier Hall and the legendary St. Charles Hotel. With its tall, narrow proportions and simple brick façade, 833 Burgundy tells another piece of the French Quarter story, a moment when American styles were beginning to mix with the older Creole traditions and create the wonderfully layered architecture that makes New Orleans so distinctive.
