Built around 1805, 931 St. Philip Street is one of the French Quarter’s enduring Creole cottages, with a story closely connected to the remarkable Dolliole family. The property’s history reaches back to Genevieve Larronde, who purchased the land in 1794, before the cottage later became home to master builder Jean-Louis Dolliole and his family for more than three decades. The Dollioles were a prominent family of free people of color whose builders and craftsmen played an important role in shaping the architecture of early New Orleans. More than two centuries later, the cottage survives as a rare example of early Creole masonry construction. Its story is not only about the preservation of an old New Orleans home, but also about the talented free Black artisans whose work helped create the distinctive architectural character of the Vieux Carré.
