Built in 1891, 1809 Burgundy Street is a classic New Orleans shotgun house tucked into the Marigny Triangle, a neighborhood where even the street names have stories to tell. Believe it or not, this stretch of Burgundy was originally called Craps Street, named for the dice game that Bernard de Marigny is said to have introduced to America. The name didn’t sit too well with some of the neighborhood’s churches, and after years of objections, the city eventually changed it, extending the name Burgundy Street from the French Quarter into the Marigny. It’s one of those wonderfully quirky bits of New Orleans history that makes a simple shotgun house like 1809 Burgundy part of a much bigger story, one shaped by the people, traditions, and colorful character of the city.
