Built in 1860, 1914 Burgundy Street sits in the historic Faubourg Marigny on land that was once part of Bernard de Marigny’s sprawling family plantation. After Marigny began dividing the estate into narrow residential lots in the early 1800s, the former plantation gradually became one of New Orleans’ earliest neighborhoods outside the French Quarter. Originally built as a Creole cottage, 1914 Burgundy also tells the story of the people who actually built much of old New Orleans. Many homes from this period weren’t designed by formally trained architects, but by talented master builders and carpenters, including many free people of color whose skill and craftsmanship helped give the city its distinctive architectural style. More than 160 years later, this modest cottage remains a small piece of that much larger story, connecting the Marigny of today with the craftspeople and communities who shaped it generations ago.
