Built in the late 19th century, 2003 Royal Street has been part of the story of the Faubourg Marigny for well over a century. Sitting at the corner of Royal Street, the building has changed with the neighborhood while somehow always remaining connected to its creative spirit. It began as a dry goods grocery and later became home to the Royal Laundry for much of the 20th century. By the 1960s, it had transformed into Until Waiting Fills, a neighborhood coffeehouse where Beat poets, musicians, artists, and other colorful characters gathered for poetry readings, street music, and long conversations that stretched late into the night. In the early 2000s, that creative tradition continued with Z'otz Coffeehouse, a 24-hour gathering place for artists, writers, musicians, and alternative exhibitions. Through all its different lives, 2003 Royal has remained the kind of place that feels distinctly New Orleans, a little unconventional, always evolving, and shaped by the people who have passed through its doors.
