Built around 1900, 808 St. Philip Street sits on a French Quarter block with a story that stretches back much further than the house itself. The Great Fires of 1788 and 1794 devastated much of the old French Colonial city, leading the Spanish government to introduce new building regulations favoring brick and other fire-resistant materials. Those changes helped create much of the architectural character we now associate with the Vieux Carré. Sitting beside the historic Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, 808 St. Philip carries on that tradition with its narrow façade, shuttered windows, and courtyard hidden away from the street. More than a century later, the house remains part of the wonderfully layered streetscape of the French Quarter, a neighborhood shaped by fire, rebuilding, craftsmanship, and generations of everyday New Orleans life.
