Built around 1850, 935 Barracks Street comes from a time when the look of the French Quarter was beginning to change. The house stands near the site of the old colonial military barracks that gave Barracks Street, and the surrounding Quartier des Barracks, its name. Its architecture blends older Creole traditions with the cleaner lines of the Greek Revival style that was becoming popular across New Orleans by the mid-19th century. During these years, earlier colonial buildings increasingly shared the streets with multi-story brick townhouses and more formal Greek Revival homes. Architect John Bohlke was among those who helped shape this changing streetscape. More than 175 years later, 935 Barracks remains part of that wonderfully layered mix of architectural styles that gives the Vieux Carré so much of its character.
